Rouso October 4 @ 2:00 PM Led by:Jesse Ryan - Saxophone Steve Clarke, Derrick Thorne, Maurice Gordon No Reservations Pay What You CAn Rouso Bio Rouso [Roo-so] is a new Calypso-folk project keeping the songs, stories, and spirit of Calypso alive while celebrating the genre’s rich connections to jazz and folk traditions. Led by JUNO-nominated, Trinidadian-born saxophonist Jesse Ryan grandson of Calypso icon Mighty Bomber and a leading voice in Afro-Caribbean jazz—the project brings together a dynamic ensemble of musicians rooted in Calypso, Caribbean, and jazz traditions. The project features calypsonian Steve Clarke, aka Mr. Wonderful , a Toronto Calypso stalwart and vibrant storyteller; percussionist Derek Thorne , who has performed with Calypso Rose and Kobo Town and studied with Cuban percussion legend Changuito; and legendary Jamaican guitarist Maurice Gordon .

Although she retired from rock and roll back per se when JUNO-winning indie-rock group Leslie Spit Treeo split up late last millennium, for several decades now she has been singing her soulful interpretations of vintage blues, jazz and Western swing all over the Greater Toronto Area. “I want to participate in the joy of the world, try to keep it light,” says Hubert. “Just trying to have some fun. Born in Alberta, Sean left at a young age to study bass in Doha, Qatar, under renowned bassist Matteo Gaspari of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. After studying music in Qatar, Finland, and Alberta, Sean now splits his time between Edmonton and Toronto. He is quickly establishing himself as one of the most active names in Canada’s music scene, performing alongside artists such as PJ Perry, Jocelyn Gould, and Melissa Aldana, to name a few. Deeply rooted in the tradition, guitarist Matthew Tenedero, drummer Petros Anagnostakos and organist Max DeGroot each bring their own personality to the swing and groove based style. Eager to innovate within the classic setting all while paying homage to the early greats such us Jimmy Smith, Wild Bill Davis and Melvin Rhyne as well as later examples of organ based music like the Meters and 70's funky Grant Green, the group can be described as a playful yet conscientious "neo-organ trio."
