Since 1995 I played here about 900 wonderful & surprising improvised happenings in music with lots of friends like Jay Clayton, Hayden Chisholm, Dave Douglas, Walter Norris, Mark Murphy, Till Brönner, Sebastian Merk, Andreas Edelmann, Jan Roder, Connie Crothers, Max Andrzejewski, Andy Fite etc.. Here’s what Richard Williams wrote about me in his blog: « If you’re ever at a loose end in Berlin on a Monday night, my advice would be to head for A-Trane, the jazz club in Charlottenburg, where Andreas Schmidt, a pianist, composer and teacher at the city’s Jazz Institut, holds a weekly free-admission session featuring a changing cast. Schmidt is a fine pianist, the salient features of his playing located somewhere between the Paul Bley of the mid-’60s and the Chick Corea of «Now He Sings, Now He Sobs». You might get an idea of his approach if I say that his first album was made (in 1995) with Lee Konitz, and a later one comprised a duo with Gary Peacock. Bokani Dyer Trio « Expect The Unexpected » FEAT : Timothy Norton-Dominic Egli Bokani Dyer is an acclaimed pianist, composer, and bandleader and has stood as one of the most formidable and creative talents in South Africa. In the exploration of the musical tradition, and the music’s present role in culture and society, he has been a significant force of his generation asking and diving deeply into the complex question of identity in South Africa. Award-winning composer, hailed as the future of South African Jazz when he won the prestigious Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year right at the outset of his career in 2011, keeps garnering accolades worldwide. His trio album Neo Native won the SAMA award for best jazz album in 2019. That year, he was also invited to perform at London’s legendary Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club as part of the Piano Trio Festival. In his musical endeavours, he finds new and innovative means to embrace traditions as examples to guide and build a more equitable and empathetic future. His unique piano-playing style expresses that notion, while in his musical concepts he embraces the contemporary musical world in a highly creative way. His most recent recorded offering is Radio Sechaba (Brownswood, 2023), in which he merges many his musical influences, and it showcases his exploration of vocal and lyrical expression. In Fall of 2026 Bokani is bringing his music to audiences in a classic trio setting – expect the unexpected, infectious rhythms, melodic explorations hailing back to the rich and various African traditions, groove, and virtuosic, innovative piano playing. Modern Jazz Doors open: 20:00 – Concert: 21:00 Davide Incorvaia (p), Dima Bondarev (tp), Giacomo Tagliavia (b), Ivars Arutyunyan (dr) Das Davide Incorvaia Continuum Quartet versteht seine Musik als einen fortwährenden, unaufhörlichen Fluss, der keine klaren Trennungen zwischen den verschiedenen musikalischen Elementen kennt. Der Name „Continuum“ spiegelt genau diesen Ansatz wider: die Vorstellung, dass Musik nicht in starre Kategorien gepresst werden kann. Für das Quartett bedeutet dies, dass Melodie, Harmonie, Rhythmus und Improvisation nicht als separate Einheiten existieren, sondern als untrennbare Teile eines größeren Ganzen, das sich in einem konstanten Wandel befindet. Die Musik des Davide Incorvaia Continuum Quartet ist ein Dialog zwischen Tradition und Moderne, bei dem die Wurzeln im klassischen Jazz zu spüren sind, während die Freiheit der Improvisation und die rhythmische Komplexität der zeitgenössischen Musik die Klanglandschaft prägen. The name “Continuum” reflects precisely this approach: the idea that music cannot be forced into rigid categories. For the quartet, this means that melody, harmony, rhythm, and improvisation do not exist as separate entities, but as inseparable parts of a larger whole that is in a state of constant flux. The music of the Davide Incorvaia Continuum Quartet is a dialogue between tradition and modernity, in which the roots of classic jazz are palpable, while the freedom of improvisation and the rhythmic complexity of contemporary music shape the soundscape.
