Sonny Rollins , the legendary tenor saxophonist known as the “Saxophone Colossus,” passed away on May 25, 2026, at the age of 95. Widely regarded as one of the greatest improvisers in jazz history, Rollins helped define modern jazz through his powerful tone, fearless creativity, and iconic compositions including “St. Thomas,” “Oleo,” and “Doxy.” Over a career spanning more than seven decades, he performed and recorded with some of the most influential musicians in jazz history, including Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Max Roach, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Clifford Brown, while later collaborations with artists such as The Rolling Stones demonstrated the far-reaching impact of his artistry across generations and genres. For this evening, we will pay tribute to Rollins life and legacy with master saxophonist Clarence Johnson III. New Orleans native Clarence Johnson III is a celebrated saxophonist, recording artist, educator, and performer whose dynamic style blends jazz fusion with “Coltranesque Impressionism” and Sun Ra-inspired futurism. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he has appeared in film and television projects including Ray with Jamie Foxx and PBS performances with Allen Toussaint, while collaborating with an impressive range of artists such as Delfeayo Marsalis, Dr. John, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, members of the Neville Brothers and The Meters, as well as international icons including Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, The Temptations, and Wynton Marsalis. Fot this performance, Johnson performs alongside an ensemble of New Orleans all-stars.
