The group draws its influences from an exotic palate of Latin America, Eastern Europe and of course, classic American swing music, painting on a canvas that can be eloquently French, starkly rustic or darkly and romantically gypsy. The quintet features: Ben Calderazzo (leader/guitar); Sophia MacRae (Clarinet); Rob Gador (double bass); Jeremy Bourke (rhythm guitar), and Nadine Joy (vocals) and is inspired by the original masters, Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli with influences from more modern groups from Europe and beyond. Join "the voice of French jazz in Australia" Noria Letts for a special Bastille Day celebration. Noria and her band The Parisians bring Manouche music alive with all its famous verve, swing and string-busting excitement. Acclaimed French chanteuse Noria Letts has embarked on an ambitious project to pen lyrics for Manouche classics and reworks many other French gems into this vivacious gypsy style. Totally authentic and with a rich, soulful voice, Noria has performed in clubs across France, Switzerland, Canada and New York and is now based in Melbourne. A genuine Francophone vocalist, she has headlined at Australia’s premier gypsy jazz festival OzManouche in Brisbane a number of times, as well as Melbourne and Sydney’s Bastille Day Festivals. She was also honoured to sing La Marseillaise for a global TV audience and capacity crowd at Marvel Stadium before the recent Matildas v France women’s football international competition. This concert will feature classic Monk and Mingus themes, with a number of styles; songs to dance to, intimate ballads and sophisticated masterpieces. Oscar Bruten’s Septet features some of the brightest upcoming minds in the Melbourne music scene. The ensemble aims to explore the last 100 years of jazz tradition, allowing the listeners to experience the rich history of jazz music. Each set of music features brand new arrangements by Oscar Bruten, aiming to transform these styles, blending the tradition of jazz music with modern language and styles.
