Der Gitarrist Kurt Rosenwinkel und der Pianist Brad Mehldau wuchsen gemeinsam im New Yorker Underground der frühen 1990er Jahre auf - in Greenwich-Village-Clubs wie dem Smalls, Seite an Seite mit jener Generation, die den Jazz neu definieren sollte. Rosenwinkel wurde zu einer der eigenständigsten und meistkopierten Instrumentalstimmen seiner Zeit; seine harmonische Sprache und sein Ton prägten, wie eine ganze Generation die Gitarre hört. Mehldau erfand das Jazz-Klaviertrio neu und schuf eines der unverwechselbarsten Werke der zeitgenössischen Musik - mühelos zwischen Bach, dem Great American Songbook und modernem Song.
