Eirik Haugbro returns to nocturne with a burning quintet ( Daryl Gott - Alto Saxophone, Alec Streete - Vibraphone, Jack Dunlevie - Piano, Bobby Wiens - Drums) to pay homage to the great Christian McBride . The ensemble will be performing music from the albums " Kind of Brown " and " People Music ", as well as exploring off the beaten path works from McBride's extensive work as a sideman. Bassist/composer/bandleader Christian McBride is one of the titans of modern jazz - his music takes inspiration from piano trio traditions of Ray Brown, hard bob and fusion groups such as VSOP and Chick Corea, to the funky stylings of James Brown. Portland native Eirik Haugbro, has performed with renowned artists the nationwide and is deeply influenced by the great piano trios of jazz history, drawing inspiration from the music of legends such as Ray Brown and Oscar Peterson. Eirik studied the double bass at Western Washington University and received a master’s in jazz studies from the University of Northern Colorado. He has performed with Pedro Martins, Genevive Artadi, Michael Mayo, John Fedchock and Ali Jackson.

Musical Style: Folk rock, singer-songwriter, jazz This special performance celebrates the music of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Joni Mitchell. Known for her prolific lyricism, Joni defied expectations by exploring several genres throughout her body of work. This performance, led by vocalist Julie Koenig, will especially focus on Joni's work in the mid to late 70s (Court and Spark, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira), which was heavily inspired by jazz. We are delighted to welcome pianist and bandleader David Mesquitic back to the stage with his acclaimed trio ( Seth Lewis - bass, Bobby Wiens - drums ). This trio is a vibrant ensemble that blends hard bop, blues, swing, and Latin influences. Expect to hear a captivating blend of original compositions, fresh arrangements, and classic jazz quintet repertoire from the last century. Award winning pianist David Mesquitic is a composer and educator committed to the intergenerational transfer of the knowledge, history, and traditions of jazz. Mesquitic currently teaches at Colorado State University (CSU) and the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). Mesquitic holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Texas at Austin where he was awarded the 2022 Eleanor Alexander Stripling Award for Excellence in Jazz Studies. Mesquitic’s artistry has also been recognized as a receipt of the 2024 United States Air Force Band Diversity Fellowship.
