FREE ADMISSION Jazz jam sessions have long been the place where musicians gather to connect, perform together, and hone their skills. Historically, jam sessions take place after-hours in the clubs, making it impossible for student musicians to participate. The Jazz Links Jam Session creates a live performance opportunity where student musicians can learn, grow, and connect with their jazz community. The JAZZ LINKS JAM SESSIONS take place every month at The Jazz Showcase from October through May from 5:00pm-7:00pm. Students perform with one another and with the Jazz Links house band, which Includes world-class, professional jazz musicians. WHO CAN JAM? Students age 9-19 perform with one another and with the Jazz Links Mentors in the house. WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE JAM SESSION? Musicians, parents, students, siblings, and friends are all welcome and encouraged to attend these free events. HOW DOES IT WORK? Students sign up on-site, and fill out a jam session info card listing three to five tunes they can play and improvise on from memory. The jam session host calls up groups of students to perform and improvise together in front of an enthusiastic live audience. WHAT SHOULD I BRING? Bring your trumpet/saxophone/trombone/voice/flute/vibes/drumsticks and a list of jazz standard tunes that you know and can improvise over. A vocal microphone, drum set, double bass, bass amp, and piano are provided for each session. Back to All Events Relax Attack Jazz Series: Chicago Experiment Organ Trio Wednesday, June 10, 2026 9:00 PM 10:00 PM Google Calendar ICS The Chicago Experiment was formed in 2025 out of Connor Bernhard's desire to perform more on guitar and realize the dream he had since he was in high school of having an organ powered band. The trio features himself on guitar, trumpet, arrangements, and compositions along with the inimitable Zack Marks on drums and Andrew "Larry" Lawrence on Hammond B3 organ. The three met nearly a decade prior to play in the band New Nostalgia and have been friends and accomplices in musical crime ever since with that group, Bonzo Squad and many others. These three musicians share a passion for the harmony and intellectual prowess of jazz, but are also captivated by the infectious groove and melodies of vernacular musics in the popular music genre. Together they synthesize those two commonly separated worlds into the funky fire that is The Chicago Experiment. Every Tuesday and Wednesday, we present Chicago’s top jazz artists in a lively atmosphere, full of cocktail-shaking and spirited conversation. Showtimes: 6:00pm-7:15pm & 8:15pm-9:30pm As a Chicago native, Mario Abney’s trumpet playing fuses traditional and extended techniques in an inventive way. His uniquely personal vision for music endows it with an infinite array of tonal colors. He is recognized for his ability to create pure musical dialogues and hear music in a universally spiritual way. These qualities make him one of New Orleans’ most pioneering young jazz musicians. Trumpeter, composer and bandleader Mario Abney’s musical career began at age 7 when he was introduced to the piano by his uncle Arthur. Influenced by both his uncle’s playing and the musical background of his church, Abney developed a love and fascination for music that grew throughout his years in high school. It was during this time that his interest turned from piano and drums to wind instruments; however, he continued to hone his percussion skills by playing drums for church services. Mario’s first encounter with jazz was when he heard the sounds of trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. This sparked a fascination and soon Mario began to explore music by Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and other great trumpet players who established this genre. Fast forwarding to 2024, Mario Abney is once again gracing the stages of his beloved hometown Chicago. From iconic venues to up-and-coming spots, he’s become a regular feature with fans eagerly anticipating each and every performance.
