Live music is back on stage at The Mad Monkfish! For those who can't make it to the Jazz Baroness Room, Monkfish now streams live all of its performances on their Facebook page . The Jazz Vocal Jam Session takes place the 1st & 3rd Sundays of each month from 3pm-6pm. A featured vocalist will start each session before inviting other vocalists to join the house band. There will be a physical sign-up sheet which will be first come, first serve. We appreciate if you purchase something to help the restaurant out for bringing all of this great jazz to us! This week the featured singer will be Chang Sun. Chang Sun is a jazz vocalist currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Vocal Performance at the New England Conservatory, where she studies with Dominique Eade and Bert Seager. Her performance experience includes the Strawberry Music Festival, the CCTV television program Golden 100 Seconds, and student charity music festivals. House band plays a set and then invites guests to sit in on this late-night instrumentals jam. The Andy Voelker Trio hosts the after hours jam session with a rotating rhythm section of local greats such as Jef Charland, Steve Langone, Keala Kaumeheiwa, Austin McMahon, Matt Stavrakas, Dave Brophy, and more. Saxophonist improviser and composer Andy Voelker has been aptly called a ”Lifer” in the world of jazz. His dedication to the roots of jazz, the real time application of past and present jazz styles, and the furthering of jazz as an art form remain Andy’s top priorities. Having grown up on the New Jersey shore surrounded by a family full of music lovers, artists, and writers Andy developed early appreciation for what is “good music”. Andy took up the saxophone in grade school band and never looked back. Moving to Boston to attend Berklee College of music, Andy stayed in Boston and continued his education on the bandstand. Andy was a pivotal member of the Matt Murphy’s Music in Brookline having both co-lead the weekly jam session and lead his own original groups at Matts - during the heyday of one of Boston’s most notable music scenes. Presently Andy is playing and recording with Clear Audience – a group he co-leads with his cohorts from the Murphy’s days. Andy is staying busy as one of Boston’s real deal jazz Saxophonists, hard at work performing around the greater Boston areas music venues bringing his forward thinking, soulful sound, and thoughtful improvisations to the present day music appreciators. He has found his niche both as a bandleader and a sideman, taking advantage of the numerous textures and combinations available in the traditional jazz small-group format. Brust has performed and/or recorded with numerous highly acclaimed musicians, including Lage Lund, Gilad Hekselman (with bassist Jon Latona), Mark Ferber (with pianist Francesca Prihasti), The Peter Silver Big Band (sharing the stage with Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Owens, Steve Wilson and others), guitarist Ben Eunson, Kristina Koller (appearing in her Quintet at the 2020 NYC Winter Jazz Fest), and many others. Nicholas is currently on faculty at New England Conservatory as part of its Prep/Continuing Education division in addition to being an Artslink Teaching Artist for Berklee College of Music’s City Music program. Nicholas released his sophomore album, Daybreak, with Outside In Music in February 2023. Featured as part of Jazziz Editors' Choice, the album was heralded as "...at once completely familiar and yet also brand new; imbued with tradition while still breaking new ground” (ukvibe.org). Jeome Wilson from All About Jazz said “Nicholas…writes strong melodies [which] his playing cuts through with ease and grace on this album..." Nicholas has a Master of Music in jazz performance from New England Conservatory as well as a Bachelor of Music in jazz studies and music education from the Eastman School of Music. This week the featured singer will be Nelly Denurra. “French singer, pianist, and songwriter, Nelly Denurra is a brand new student at Berklee College of Music. Passionate about arts from a very young age, she trained in contemporary dance and theater while studying classical music (clarinet and piano), folk, pop, and rock (guitar). After high school, she earned a Diploma in voice and composition from the Lyon Conservatory. Also devoted to music education, she obtained a State Diploma in music teaching at Cefedem in Lyon, a higher education institution. Inspired by poetry, jazz, and French *chanson*, she is developing a project centered on her own original compositions. She has recorded an album of her songs, accompanied by piano, cello, double bass, and drums. She also created a musical show with her vocal quartet, "La Nébuleuse," blending a cappella singing with body percussion. As a versatile, curious, and creative artist, she refuses to bear a label.
