Im April spielten der Gitarrist Tal Arditi, der Bassist Christian Müller und Ernst Bier zum zweiten Mal im Little Shop of Jazz von Ernst miteinander. Die Chemie zwischen den Musikern stimmte sofort und das Publikum war sehr begeistert. Das veranlasste die Musiker dazu ein neues Trio zu gründen und hier sind sie noch einmal! Tal Arditi ist ein israelischer, in Berlin lebender Jazz-Gitarrist und Komponist. Anerkannt als junges Gitarrenwunder, begann Tal im Alter von 16 Jahren mit dem Studium im prestigeträchtigen „Jazzinstitut“ – Programm der „Rimon Music University“. Im Alter von 18 Jahren schloss er auf der renommierten Rimon School of Music in Ramat Hasharon in der Nähe von Tel Aviv erfolgreich mit einem Jazz-Diplom ab und beschloss nach Berlin zu ziehen. In Berlin wurde Tal Arditi schnell zu einem der gefragtesten Musiker in der internationalen und lokalen Jazzszene und begann, regelmäßig in Clubs in ganz Europa sowie auf Festivals wie dem Umbria Jazz-Festival, dem Xjazz Festival, dem Red Sea Festival, dem Fusion Festival oder dem Open Air Keintal zu spielen. Christian Müller ist Bassist und Komponist, der nach den Stationen Hamburg und Amsterdam, seit 2019 den Mittelpunkt seines Schaffens nach Berlin verlegt hat. Er studierte an der HfMT Hamburg sowie am Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Parallel dazu wurde er ins Bundesjazzorchester (BujazzO) unter der Leitung von Niels Klein und Jiggs Whigham aufgenommen. Konzertreisen führten ihn auf Bühnen in- und außerhalb Deutschlands. Unter anderem: Elbjazz-Festival (DE), Jazz Baltica-Festival(DE), Jazzkaar Festival (EST), Borneo Jazz Festival (MYS). In der Vergangenheit spielte er mit: John Schröder, Tony Malaby, Gilad Hekselmanm Seamus Blake, Marcio Doctor, Wanja Slavin, Ensemble Resonanz und noch vielen weiteren fabelhaften Musikerinnen. Christians Arbeit als Sideman ist auf mehreren Alben mit diversen Projekten dokumentiert. Ende 2025 kam sein Debütalbum „Golden Gloom“ heraus, welches ausschließlich Eigenkompositionen enthält. Ernst Bier studierte Schlagzeug bei Billy Brooks, Charlie Persip, Vernell Fournier und Elvin Jones. Von 1983-1987 lebte und arbeitete er in NY-City. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus den Staaten lebte Ernst zunächst bei Köln und dann ab 1992 in Berlin. Die Liste der Musiker, mit denen er gearbeitet hat, liest sich wie ein Who’s Who des Jazz. English Triple is a new band project by drummer Ernst Bier, formed two months ago at the A-Trane jazz club. In April, guitarist Tal Arditi, bassist Christian Müller, and Ernst Bier played together for the second time in Ernst’s Little Shop of Jazz. The chemistry between the three musicians clicked immediately, and the audience was thrilled. This prompted the musicians to form a new trio , and here they are again! Let yourself be swept away by the incredible energy of these excellent musicians. They live with and through their music, a passion they consistently share with their audience with great joy . Tal Arditi is an Israeli jazz guitarist and composer living in Berlin. Recognized as a young guitar prodigy, Tal began studying at the prestigious “Jazz Institute” program at Rimon Music University at the age of 16. At the age of 18, he successfully graduated with a jazz diploma from the renowned Rimon School of Music in Ramat Hasharon near Tel Aviv and decided to move to Berlin. In Berlin, Tal Arditi quickly became one of the most sought-after musicians on the international and local jazz scene and began playing regularly in clubs throughout Europe as well as at festivals such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, the Xjazz Festival, the Red Sea Festival, the Fusion Festival, and the Open Air Keintal. Christian Müller is a bassist and composer who, after spending time in Hamburg and Amsterdam, moved his creative center to Berlin in 2019. He studied at the HfMT Hamburg and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. At the same time, he was accepted into the Bundesjazzorchester (BujazzO) under the direction of Niels Klein and Jiggs Whigham. SERGIO MEDINA - VOCALS ALEXANDER WIENAND - PIANO URS JOHNEN - BASS Rasiel Almanza - PERCUSSION DAVID MILLAN - DRUMS DAVID BEECROFT - SAXOPHONE GREG AMBROISINE - TRUMPET (for English please scroll down) Klanggewordene Lebensfreude, kubanische Salsa und aufregender europäischer Jazz: nichts weniger als das versprechen Sergio Medina, Alexander Wienand und Urs Johnen mit ihrer aktuellen Formation Havana Berlin Express. Zu Beginn ihrer gemeinsamen Arbeit begaben sich die drei gemeinsam auf die Suche nach den Ursprüngen der Salsa, des Son und der Rumba – oder vielmehr: Sergio, in der kubanischen Hauptstadt wohlbekannt und seit Jahrzehnten eine Größe in der dortigen Musikszene, nahm seine Freunde mit auf eine Erlebnisreise in die Musikwelt der karibischen Insel. Gemeinsam mit Solist*innen aus der internationalen Szene präsentieren Havana Berlin Express eine mitreißende Fusion von traditioneller kubanischer Salsa und zeitgenössischer Jazzimprovisation – und machen es fast unmöglich, nicht zu tanzen… Sergio Medina ist in Santiago de Cuba geboren und verbrachte einen großen Teil seines bisherigen Lebens in Habana. Als Sänger, Komponist und Texter arbeitete er in allen Bereichen der kubanischen Musik mit unterschiedlichen Bands und in verschiedenen Projekten. 1984 begann er zunächst als Tontechniker bei “Conjunto Los Karachi”, in dieser Zeit entstanden erste eigene Kompositionen, die ins Repertoire aufgenommen wurden. Seit 1989 war er in zahlreichen Ensembles aktiv: Grupo Mackandal, Grupo Afrocaribe, Orquesta Los Filin, Orquesta Siglo XX, Orquesta Havana All Star, Orquesta Islacaribe, Orquesta Son Caturla, Havana Son Light, Amaranto Fernandez y su grupo. Seit 2019 lebt und arbeitet Sergio Medina in Berlin Alexander Wienand ist ein komponierender Pianist, für den die Welten des Jazz und der sogenannten ernsten Musik untrennbar zum Inspirationsfeld gehören. Er ist mit eigenen Ensembles international aktiv und war Gast auf Bühnen wie dem Musikfest Stuttgart, den Europäischen Wochen Passau, dem Düsseldorf Festival, der Jazzahead Bremen, oder der Cologne Jazznight. Er ist Träger des bayerischen Kunstförderpreises und war Stipendiat verschiedener Stiftungen, wie zum Beispiel der deutschen Stiftung Musikleben, dem NRW Kultursekretariat und des deutschen Tonkünstlerverbands. Wienand ist in Calw aufgewachsen und lebt in Berlin. Der Kontrabassist und künstlerische Produzent Urs Johnen ist in Berlin, im Schwarzwald und auf Mallorca zuhause und arbeitet mit Projektorchestern und Ensembles im Jazz- und Klassikbereich. Sein musikalisches Interesse gilt jenseits von Genreschubladen dialogischer und kommunikativer Musik in verschiedensten Erscheinungsformen. David Beecroft ist ein Saxophonist mit außergewöhnlichem Sound und Konzept. Er wurde 1956 in Toronto, Kanada, geboren und begann zu spielen, nachdem er das Saxofon seines Vaters im Keller entdeckt hatte. Als Kind begeisterte ihn das Jammen mit der Familie für die Musik. Später nahm er Saxophonunterricht bei Don Englert und Pat La Barbera, die beide Mitglieder der Buddy Rich Big Band waren. Mit 18 Jahren spielte Beecroft bereits professionell und zog drei Jahre später nach Amsterdam, um sich auf Jazzmusik zu spezialisieren. Dort kam er in Kontakt mit vielen wunderbaren Musikern wie John Clayton, Wilbur Little, Hans Dulfer, John Engels, Irv Rocklin und Adrie Braat, um nur einige zu nennen. 1994 zog David nach Berlin, wo er sich seitdem als angesehener Saxophonist und Multiinstrumentalist etabliert hat. Greg Ambroisine ist ein in Deutschland ansässiger Trompeter, Regisseur, Pädagoge und Komponist, der weltweit mit seiner Musik aufgetreten ist. Ambroisine wurde in Sydney geboren und zog nach Beginn seines Musikstudiums nach Melbourne um. Nach seinem Abschluss am Victorian College of the Arts reiste Ambroisine als professioneller Jazzmusiker durch Kanada und Deutschland. Während dieser Zeit trat er mit dem Trompeter Maarcus Belgrave (Ray Charles, Charles Mingus, Motown Records, Tribe Records, Blue Note Records) und dem legendären Schlagzeuger Richard "Pistol" Allen auf. Rasiel Almanza kommt aus Havanna, Kuba, und lebt seit 2022 in Berlin. Er ist professionell ausgebildeter Perkussionist mit Schwerpunkt in der afrokubanischen Folklore. Er spielte hauptberuflich in bekannten kubanischen Bands wie z.B. „Telmary & HabanaSana“ und „Azúcar Negra“, sowie in der Band „Alafia con Ire“ und der Tanzgruppe „Conjunto Folklórico“ der Universität in Havanna. Seit vielen Jahren spielt er Bata-Trommeln auf religiösen Zeremonien und begeistert mit seiner Stimme und Energie. David Millan gehört zu den interessantesten Schlagzeugern der derzeitigen Musikwelt. Das kolumbianische Ausnahmetalent studierte erst in Ecuador und dann für den Master am Jazz-Institut Berlin und bereichert nun schon seit einigen Jahren die europäische Szene. Bekannt ist er für seine Stilsicherheit in fast allen Bereichen der lateinamerikanischen Musik und seine Wandlungs- und Anpassungsfähigkeit. Er arbeitete mit vielen namhaften internationalen Künstlern zusammen und ist neben seiner Tätigkeit als freischaffender Künstler ebenfalls als Produzent, Tontechniker und Leiter seiner eigenen Online-Schlagzeugschule tätig. Joy of life made sound, Cuban salsa and exciting European jazz: nothing less than that is what Sergio Medina, Alexander Wienand and Urs Johnen promise with their current formation Havana Berlin Express. At the beginning of their joint work, the three of them went in search of the origins of salsa, son and rumba - or rather: Sergio, who is known like a mad dog in the Cuban capital and has been an important figure in the local music scene for decades, took his friends on a journey through the musical world of the Caribbean island. Together with soloists from the international scene, Havana Berlin Express present a rousing fusion of traditional Cuban salsa and contemporary jazz improvisation at Zig Zag - and make it almost impossible not to dance... Sergio Medina was born in Santiago de Cuba and spent a large part of his life so far in Habana. As a singer, composer and lyricist, he worked in all areas of Cuban music with different bands and in various projects. In 1984 he first started as a sound engineer with "Conjunto Los Karachi", during this time he created his first own compositions, which were included in the repertoire. Since 1989 he has been active in numerous ensembles: Grupo Mackandal, Grupo Afrocaribe, Orquesta Los Filin, Orquesta Siglo XX, Orquesta Havana All Star, Orquesta Islacaribe, Orquesta Son Caturla, Havana Son Light, Amaranto Fernandez y su grupo. Since 2019, Sergio Medina lives and works in Berlin. Alexander Wienand is a composing pianist for whom the worlds of jazz and so-called serious music are inseparable fields of inspiration. He is internationally active with his own ensembles and has been a guest on stages such as the Musikfest Stuttgart, the European Weeks Passau, the Düsseldorf Festival, the Jazzahead Bremen, or the Cologne Jazznight. He is a recipient of the Bavarian Art Promotion Award and has been a scholarship holder of various foundations, such as the German Foundation for Musical Life, the NRW Cultural Secretariat, and the German Association of Musicians. Wienand grew up in Calw and lives in Berlin. The double bass player and artistic producer Urs Johnen lives in Berlin, the Black Forest and Mallorca and works with project orchestras and ensembles in the jazz and classical fields. His musical interest is beyond genre pigeonholes dialogic and communicative music in various manifestations. Rasiel Almanza hails from Havana, Cuba, and has been living in Berlin since 2022. He is a professionally trained percussionist specializing in Afro-Cuban folklore. Rasiel has played with well-known Cuban bands such as "Telmary & HabanaSana" and "Azúcar Negra," as well as with the band "Alafia con Ire" and the dance group "Conjunto Folklórico" at the University of Havana. For many years, he has performed Bata drums at religious ceremonies, captivating audiences with his voice and energy. David Millán is one of the most intriguing drummers in today's music world. The exceptional Colombian talent studied in Ecuador and then completed his master's degree at the Jazz Institute Berlin, enriching the European scene for several years now. He is renowned for his stylistic versatility across nearly all areas of Latin American music and his remarkable adaptability. Millán has collaborated with many renowned international artists and, in addition to his work as a freelance artist, he is also active as a producer, sound engineer, and director of his own online drum school. David Beecroft is a saxophonist with an extraordinary sound and concept. He was born in Toronto, Canada in 1956 and began playing after discovering his father's saxophone in the basement. As a child, jamming with his family got him excited about music. He later took saxophone lessons from Don Englert and Pat La Barbera, both members of the Buddy Rich Big Band. By the age of 18, Beecroft was playing professionally and three years later moved to Amsterdam to specialize in jazz music. There he came in contact with many wonderful musicians such as John Clayton, Wilbur Little, Hans Dulfer, John Engels, Irv Rocklin and Adrie Braat, to name a few. In 1994 David moved to Berlin where he has since established himself as a respected saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist. Greg Ambroisine is a German-based trumpeter, director, educator and composer who has performed his music worldwide. Ambroisine was born in Sydney and moved to Melbourne after beginning his music studies. After graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts, Ambroisine traveled throughout Canada and Germany as a professional jazz musician. During this time he performed with trumpeter Maarcus Belgrave (Ray Charles, Charles Mingus, Motown Records, Tribe Records, Blue Note Records) and legendary drummer Richard "Pistol" Allen.
