Pianist and composer Hayoung Lyou brings her trio to Blues Alley in July, presenting music from her critically acclaimed album "The Myth of Katabasis." A rising voice in New York's creative music scene, Lyou crafts compositions that bridge late Romantic and early 20th-century classical traditions with bebop forms and avant-garde sensibilities. The album, featuring Thomas Morgan on bass and Steven Crammer on drums, has earned recognition from Downbeat, the Italian national magazine "Il Manifesto," and The New York City Jazz Record. Downbeat praised the trio's approach as "constantly reminding you that the realm it's evoking is a false one," noting how the music moves between refined classical elements and philosophical inquiry, weaving together "gravitas" and "ironic humor." For this performance, Lyou joins forces with drummer Steven Crammer and bassist Walter Stinson, exploring the album's material through the unique chemistry of this configuration. Her work fuses Greek mythology with psychological narratives, creating landscapes that fly between composition and improvisation. A graduate of Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory, Lyou has quickly established herself in Brooklyn's creative music community. Her debut album "Metamorphosis" arrived in 2020, and she collaborates regularly with forward-thinking artists including Jacob Shulman, Nick Rosario, and Elijah Shiffer.
