He began studying piano at the age of six, learning both classical and modern pop repertoire. Rolfe began his collegiate studies at Cornish College of the Arts, the leading music school in Seattle, then moved to New York City and completed his B.F.A, in music performance, at the New School for Social Researches' Mannes Conservatory. Nick has played piano and/or keyboards for numerous musicians including: Aretha Franklin, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Idina Menzel, trumpeter Chris Botti, Hip-Hop luminary Busta Rhymes, India Arie, Earth, Wind and Fire legend Verdine White, vocal sensation Ledisi, and many others. Nick Rolfe's award winning ( SESAC National Performance Award ) debut as a leader, "The Persuader" (Blue Jay Records) was the number 5 instrumental jazz record in the United States on multiple charts in 2001. Quinn Walker strives to bring exciting music that can live within and outside the bounds of the jazz idiom simultaneously. A bandleader, collaborator with many groups, composer, and educator, Quinn has become an important part of the jazz scene in Portland while receiving his Bachelor’s degree in jazz studies from Portland State University in 2019, and Eugene while receiving his Masters degree in jazz studies from the University of Oregon in 2022. Walker leads several groups of his own around the PDX area including his quartet the Quinn Walker Group and the bigSMALLband an 8 piece group featuring Quinns writing for small big band + vocalist. Quinn co-leads the Blue Butler Big Band with Paris Butler, the Walker-Barber Group with David Barber, and Garden Trio with David Barber and Xylyn Hathaway. The band was founded in 2008 by Andrew Oliver and Scott Kennedy and has seen various personnel changes over the years as band members have come and gone from the Portland area. Now a seven-piece band with the recent additions of Sam Dechenne on trumpet and Tyson Stubelek on drums, as well as Andrew’s return from London in 2020, the Sextet continues to refine its visceral, joyful, and authentic approach to traditional jazz, stomp, and swing.
