The Magic Sax Quartet, also known as the Saxophone Quartet of Santiago de Cuba, was founded on July 4, 1995. The ensemble is made up of outstanding instrumentalists, each contributing an important role, with a strong musical background that allows them to combine styles ranging from jazz to traditional Cuban son. Each member can take on a soloist role when needed, but their main focus is the fusion of their individual talents to achieve a rich and cohesive sound. The group has received high praise from specialized publications such as Jazz Man, Jazz Podium, and World Music, which highlight their virtuosity and their innovative, distinctive sound within this format. In an interview with Paquito D’Rivera published in DownBeat magazine, he praised their interpretation of Ernesto Lecuona’s work “La Comparsa,” which they perform masterfully and with great versatility. Elizabeth Cormier is an emerging jazz singer, composer and lyricist based in Montréal. Originally from a small village in northern Quebec, she followed the call of music to the metropolis seven years ago. Since then, her warm and deep tone has taken her onto vibrant stages — from Maison de la Culture Janine-Sutto to the Centaur Theater, from Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill to the Montreal Art Center and into major festivals such as the Montreal International Jazz Festival, Festi Jazz de Mont-Tremblant, Toronto Undergraduate Jazz Festival and Festival de la Quinzaine Jazz. Greatly influenced by Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae and Anita O’Day, Elizabeth’s voice can be described as dynamic with a warm and deep tone. Greatly influenced by the music of Django Reinhardt, Taiwanese-Canadian guitarist Denis Chang’s formative years were spent alongside the greatest Gypsy Jazz musicians such as Fapy Lafertin, Ritary Gaguenetti, Paulus Schäfer, and Emmanuel Kassimo to name just these few. He is the only guitarist in Canada to appear on Hot Club Records. Over the years, this virtuoso guitarist quickly developed his own style inspired by various styles of music while remaining faithful to the Gypsy Jazz style; adding his own compositions to the standard Gypsy Jazz repertoire.
