Over a span of 20 years, Hank featured on hundreds of legendary recordings both as a bandleader and sideman, including his most notable album, Soul Station. This evening of music will feature iconic hits from Hank’s career, including ‘Remember’ and ‘This I Dig Of You’. Join us for a night celebrating ‘The Music of Mobley’ at the Paris Cat Jazz Club. The Music of Billie Holiday and Lester Young Two of the greatest musicians of the 20th century, legendary singer Billie Holiday and tenor saxophonist Lester Young collaborated on a series of beloved recordings throughout the 1930s and 40s. Both cherished for their warm, unique sounds, the two shared a deep and enduring friendship along with their fruitful musical partnership. They lived together for a period in the mid 1930s as Lester Young was establishing himself as one of the top saxophonists of the day, and they each coined the other’s iconic nickname — Lester giving Billie the moniker “Lady Day”, and her dubbing him “Pres” (The President of the Saxophone) in return. This concert will feature classic Monk and Mingus themes, with a number of styles; songs to dance to, intimate ballads and sophisticated masterpieces. Oscar Bruten’s Septet features some of the brightest upcoming minds in the Melbourne music scene. The ensemble aims to explore the last 100 years of jazz tradition, allowing the listeners to experience the rich history of jazz music. Expect a night of exploration as we indulge the sound and story of the tenor sax, and offer exciting modern takes on some favourite jazz classics. A Victorian College of the Arts graduate, Richard Pavlidis has released three acclaimed solo albums and earned international praise for his commanding sound and inventive spirit.
