Singer-songwriter Erykah Badu is known, often hailed as the “Queen of Neo-Soul,” came on the scene in 1997 with her debut album Baduizm, a soulful, jazz-heavy production blended with spoken word-style storytelling. A pioneer of the neo-soul movement, Badu draws thematic influence from the Black pride and afro-futurist aesthetics of the ’70s, paired with light and emotive vocals that call back to jazz legend Billie Holiday. Her most recent project, released August 28, is titled Before the World Blows: The Abi and Alan Experiment a collaboration between Badu and hip-hop producer The Alchemist. The pair performs with hip-hop trio De La Soul, known for their foundational contributions to jazz-rap and alternative hip-hop, as well as their creative and meditative lyricism.
