For those who can't make it to the Jazz Baroness Room, Monkfish now streams live all of its performances on their Facebook page . House band plays a set and then invites guests to sit in on this late-night instrumentals jam. Sam Spear, alto saxophone Sam Spear is a woodwind instrumentalist, composer, and music educator based in Boston, MA. As a performer, she is at home in a variety of musical settings including swinging quintets, modern jazz orchestras, and chamber ensembles. In addition to her own group, she regularly performs with the Imagine Orchestra directed by Bill Banfield, the Michelle Tucker Quintet, the Mad Monkfish Orchestra directed by Peter Kenagy, and the New England Jazz Collaborative, among others. She also leads an active life as a composer and arranger with works being performed by groups including the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble, Imagine Orchestra, the New England Jazz Collaborative, and Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra. She writes works for a variety of instrumentations, styles, and experience levels with nearly 100 of her charts available on her sheet music store. Spear is a professor at Berklee College of Music where she teaches in the Contemporary Writing and Production Department and Five-Week Summer Performance Program. She is an affiliated artist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is a member of two ensembles in residence at the Longy School of Music of Bard College. Spear has experience teaching students from elementary through undergraduate levels in topics including music theory, ear training, improvisation, and arranging, as well as private instruction and ensemble coaching. Gender equality in the jazz community has been a focus of Spear’s efforts. She serves on the board of Jazzhers, a non-profit “committed to shaping the future of jazz by helping young women and non-binary musicians become connected and feel empowered within the jazz community.” She presented her lecture Mary Lou Williams in the Age of #MeToo at the 2019 IAWM and FT&M15 joint conference. Her advocacy work has been featured in Downbeat Magazine’s February 2019 issue and in a news story on Boston’s local NPR station, WBUR. Spear co-founded Women in Jazz Collective, a student-run organization at Berklee College of Music with the mission of empowering female and non-binary jazz musicians. Spear holds a Master of Music in jazz saxophone performance from New England Conservatory and a Bachelor of Music in saxophone performance and jazz composition from Berklee College of Music, where she attended on a Presidential Scholarship Make reservations for the Jazz Baroness Room here !

Greg Abate saxophonist, flutist, composer and recording artist who tours Internationally and spends 2 months in the UK playing clubs and festivals. Greg is proud to have been selected number 2 Alto Saxophonist on the Downbeat Magazine Readers Poll in 2022 and has been in top 5 for 3 years now! At the beginning of his career Greg played lead alto saxophone in the RayCharles Orchestra . Greg also had the opportunity to play tenor sax with the revived Artie Shaw Orchestra under leadership of Dick Johnson. Following this experience , Greg ventured out as a soloist or with his quartet to Jazz Festivals, Jazz Societies and Jazz Clubs throughout the U.S. Canada and abroad, including most of Europe, and United Kingdom. Greg recorded his first CD Bop City Live At Birdland NYC in 1991 on the Candid Jazz Label with the trio of James Williams, Rufus Reid and Kenny Washington. Greg has recorded 25 recordings as a leader on the Candid , Whaling City Sound , And currently Sumitt Label. With Greg will be the trio of Tim Ray , John Lockwood and Mark Walker who are also Internationally Acclaimed ! All GA sections (Main Floor GA & Miles Davis Mezzanine) will be seated by host and are first come, first served (other than where a reserved sign is posted to table). Joe Hunt is a jazz drummer, educator, author, and historian. In the early 1960s, Joe Hunt performed and recorded alongside the late NEC Distinguished Artist-in-Residence Emeritus George Russell, with releases on Decca and Riverside. Hunt joined The Stan Getz Quartet in 1964, recording several releases on Verve, then was a member of the Bill Evans Trio from 1966-1967. The remainder of the 1960s found Hunt performing or recording with several other jazz luminaries including Chet Baker, Eric Dolphy, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Charles Mingus, Bob Brookmeyer, and the late Herb Pomeroy. In the 1970s and 1980s, Hunt was a member of The National Jazz Ensemble, led jazz groups with John Scofield, Mike Stern, and Santi Debriano, and toured with quartets of Red Rodney and Hal McKusick. The 1990s, and beyond, have included membership in The Smithsonian Jazz Masters Orchestra, with former NEC president Gunther Schuller, performances with Kenny Burrell, Joe Lavano, Joanne Brackeen, and Tal Farlow, as well as recordings with the Bert Seager Quintet, and also, Trio. Hunt is the author of the 1994 book 52nd Street Beat, which is a historical look at jazz drummer greats from 1945 to 1965. The Joe Hunt quartet features a modern jazz ensemble music played by top local pros: Mark Pinto - alto saxophone, formerly years with the Buddy Rich band John Lockwood – bass, formerly with Joe Henderson, Lee Konitz, current Fringe member Yuka Hamano Hunt – piano, voice, arranger Joe Hunt – drums, formerly with George Russell, Stan Getz, Jim Hall, Dexter Gordon, and Bill Evans We pay tribute to a special composer or performer at most performances. Recent shows have included: Burt Bacharach, Ahmad Jamal, Bill Evans, and Gigi Gryce. Future shows will include the music of Paul and Carla Bley, and arranger, Johnny Mandel. His music has been called elegant and adventurous, both modern and rooted in tradition, with a sound all its own.
