About Boris Kozlov

Posi-Tone’s biography traces Kozlov’s early piano studies in Moscow, his switch to electric bass, and his training at the Gnesin Music Academy. After winning the 1991 USSR Competition of Jazz Soloists, he moved to New York City to study and perform jazz.[2]

The Charles Mingus organization identifies Kozlov as bassist, arranger, and musical director for the Mingus Big Band, Mingus Dynasty, and Mingus Orchestra. That work places ensemble stewardship and arranging alongside his acoustic and electric bass practice.[1]

His 2022 Posi-Tone leader album First Things First documents acoustic, electric, and piccolo bass roles. The quintet joins Kozlov with Donny McCaslin, Behn Gillece, Art Hirahara, and Rudy Royston in a program recorded in Brooklyn.[3]

Mingus ensembles

The official Mingus biography names Kozlov as bassist, arranger, and musical director across three repertory bands.[1]

First Things First
