Career Overview
About George Cables
Cables' official biography follows his classical training in New York, early work with the Jazz Samaritans, and brief tenure with Art Blakey before a Sonny Rollins tour brought him to the West Coast. There he recorded and performed with Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Bobby Hutcherson, and other major bandleaders.[1]
Two long-running associations helped define his work as an accompanist: two years in Dexter Gordon's quartet beginning in 1977 and an extensive recording relationship with Art Pepper. Cables' own catalog places that history beside solo, trio, and larger-ensemble projects built from his compositions and arrangements.[1][2][5]
