The Klezmatics & Friends Celebrate 40 Years of Hope, Resistance, and Radical Yiddish Joy "On a good night, they can rank among the greatest bands on the planet." — Time Out New York From 1988’s Shvaygn = toyt (Silence = Death) to this year’s We Were Made For These Times, The Klezmatics have reimagined Yiddish music for a changing world — spearheading the global revival of klezmer music by playing it with integrity and love of tradition minus the shmaltz and nostalgia usually associated with it, while giving voice to hope, resilience, and social change. On September 24th, the Grammy-winning band comes to New York’s legendary Symphony Space gathering friends, collaborators, and special guests from across four decades of musical adventure to celebrate a legacy unlike any other in contemporary roots music. The evening will feature music from all of their 14 recordings, including their Grammy Award-winning album, Wonder Wheel lyrics by Woody Guthrie, with a special focus on Woody Guthrie’s inspiring texts, and the Klezmatics’ collaborations with Guthrie. The Klezmatics are a quintessentially New York band. Their music, like that of Eddie Palmieri, the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and Lou Reed, is the sound of New York.
