About
“Active since the mid-70s, Tim Berne came up alongside John Zorn and other fellow luminaries of New York’s so-called downtown scene but has carved out a singular path. He has written an abundance of music that packs a visceral thrill despite its elaborate sonic geometry, and played it with a long string of bands, often including musicians who have gone on to become internationally renowned stars of cutting-edge jazz... “I’m not an artist; I’m just playing music,” he said, sitting at a table in his sunny combination living and dining room a few hours before a Lowlands gig in June, wearing a baggy blue shirt, his face dotted with salt-and-pepper stubble. He doesn’t want to feel “like I’m performing for you, and I’m a different species than you are,” he explained, his voice heavy with disdain for pretense. “That’s why I like playing in bars.”” — Hank Shteamer, NY Times “Listening to Fallows, the latest release from acclaimed jazz saxophonist Caroline Davis, is like entering a portal into another dimension. That sounds like a cliché, but it’s accurate. The sounds she conjures on her alto saxophone, aided by a processing mechanism called an organelle, form a unique and often mesmerizing combination. When accompanied by odd field recordings, they form the ultimate mix of organic and mechanical, fusing sounds and genres.” — Chris Ingalls, PopMatters Come hear two acclaimed, cutting-edge alto saxophonists/composers for Poughkeepsie First Friday in November at the amazing Reason & Ruckus. The incendiary Tim Berne leads his band CAPATOSTA, a trio with Gregg Belisle-Chi on guitar and Tom Rainey on drums. Opening will be Caroline Davis, performing a solo set of sax and electronics in support of her latest, celebrated recording Fallows, a set rescheduled from her rained-out Sunday session last weekend. Doors at 6 — $20 at the door. Reason & Ruckus has a full bar and outstanding cuisine available courtesy @mamalas2019 Food for the Soul, located onsite. Mark your calendars and please join us in the Queen City on 11/6 at 7 PM.
