Hina Oikawa Short Songs: Voices Of A Hundred Poets

LeFrak Concert Hall in Flushing.

About

Hina Oikawa Short Songs returns to Queens for a multisensory evening where a 10-piece jazz ensemble — horns, rhythm section, and vocals — performs in real-time dialogue with live visual art. The program features music from Hina Oikawa’s debut album, Short Songs, a large ensemble project that fuses improvised jazz with tanka, the traditional Japanese poetic form, alongside a new piece from the project’s next chapter, Voices of a Hundred Poets, inspired by the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, a classical anthology of one hundred waka poems. Oikawa was recently honored by the International Alliance for Women in Music for her tanka-inspired composition “Manhattan,” also featured on the album. Friday, September 25, 7:00–8:30 PM at LeFrak Concert Hall, Queens College. Free admission, reservation required. This performance is presented with support from the Queens Arts Fund.
