Lena Seikaly & the Chris Grasso Trio

LaPortas in Alexandria.

About

Vocalist Lena Seikaly performs with that classic, warm mezzo-soprano tone and swing. She performs standards and originals with confidence and imagination, and also writes gorgeous, dreamy songs. Here she performs in pianist Chris Grasso and his trio. Grasso is one of the most in-demand accompanists for D.C.’s jazz vocal greats: he regularly collaborates with folks like Sharón Clark, Alison Crockett and Lena Seikaly. He is skillful at highlighting other members of a band, and also shines on his own through a love for classic Bill Evans/Red Garland-esque melody and balladry. Tommy Cecil plays bass and Lenny Robinson anchors it on drums. Here they team up to perform a tribute to “The Divine One” Sarah Vaughan. Two separate sets at 6 and 8:30 p.m.
