Lionel Lyles’ voice on the tenor saxophone is straightforward and impassioned. His improvising, arranging and bandleading takes most of its cues from the beloved hard bop tradition of the 50s and 60s, but for some gigs, his acoustic quintet transforms into an electrified R&B outfit.
