Now based in New York City, he has quickly built an international career, touring and recording with artists such as Paquito D’Rivera, Miguel Zenón, Ari Hoenig, Jonathan Kreisberg, Yosvany Terry, Dayna Stephens, Manuel Valera, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Hamish also leads his own quintet and is a founding member of the collaborative trio Immigrantet, alongside Nicola Caminiti and Juan Diego Villalobos.

After establishing himself as a prominent figure in the New Zealand jazz community, Hamish earned a full-tuition scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music, prompting his move to New York in 2018. Following his first year of study, he was invited to join Paquito D’Rivera’s quintet, launching a period of extensive touring throughout the United States and abroad. Since graduating, he continues to perform with groups including Manuel Valera’s New Cuban Express, the Rotem Sivan Trio, and Dayna Stephens’s Custom Deluxe.

Hamish’s musical foundation began early, studying multiple instruments before discovering the bass at age eleven. His versatility across genres was recognized through numerous national awards in New Zealand, including multiple wins at the New Zealand Improvisation Contest and top honors at the National Youth Jazz Competition. He later toured Europe with the Jeunesses Musicales World Jazz Orchestra and performed with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.

In addition to his active performance schedule, Hamish teaches privately in New York and abroad and has served as a guest clinician in the United States, New Zealand, and Mexico. He is an endorsed artist with Aguilar Amplification and Headway Music Audio.
