Stephan Crump’s Passerine
Rhizome DC in Washington, Takoma.
About
Passerine is the newest project of bassist Stephen Crump. Alongside Crump, the quartet features Ches Smith on percussion, Kenny Warren on trumpet and David Leon on alto flute and saxophone. Crump has been an active performer, composer and bandleader the New York City jazz scene since the mid-nineties. His compositions are rooted in straight-ahead traditions, influenced by the styles of Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Passerine’s debut, self-titled album was released October 23, and is inspired by birds and their various types of nest-building. The project maintains Crump’s post-bop foundation while venturing into elements of contemporary creative music, playing with space, expressive improvisation and experimental melodies.
