About
Gabriel Vicéns Sextet - 8 pm and 9 pm Gabriel Vicéns - guitar Román Filiú - alto saxophone Vitor Gonçalves - piano Rick Rosato - bass E.J. Strickland - drums Marcos López - percussion $20 Gabriel Vicéns Sextet presents music from their recently released album, Niebla, at Ibeam Brooklyn. Led by Puerto Rican-born, New York City-based guitarist and composer Gabriel Vicéns, the ensemble features Román Filiú (alto saxophone), Vitor Gonçalves (piano), Rick Rosato (bass), E.J. Strickland (drums), and Marcos López (percussion). Drawing from the rhythms of bomba and plena, modern jazz, and avant-garde experimentation, the group explores the tension between propulsive, grid-like rhythms and moments of fluidity, silence, and stillness. At the heart of Niebla is an interest in temporality, the ways music can stretch, suspend, and reshape our experience of time, creating a sound world where ancestral memory, contemporary expression, and creative freedom intersect. "Niebla translates to ‘fog,’ translating in musical terms here to a poetic, questioning frame of mind. The album is an artful adventure of both the introspective and tastefully blowing kind." - Josef Woodard, DownBeat ★★★★ "…a joyous journey through Latin bomba rhythm and the intricate ensemble sound of his six-piece group, reaching a peak on the spirited traded solos of the title track." - Ammar Kalia, The Guardian "Consistently unpredictable, often vertiginous… and ambitious through and through." - Eric Snider, JazzTimes
