Im Mittelpunkt der Gruppe stehen die Sängerin Alejandra Charry und der Perkussionist Moises Zamora Mezù, die beide gemeinsam in demselben kolumbianischen Dorf aufgewachsen sind. Erweitert und vertieft werden ihre packenden Grooves und experimentellen improvisatorischen Ansätze, die sich keiner bestimmten musikalischen Tradition unterwerfen, von Saxofonistin Sakina Abdou und Bassist Thibault Cellier . Zum temperamentvollen Quartett ¡ Ya voy ! gehören zwei der herausragendsten Persönlichkeiten der französischen Improvisationsmusik: die Saxofonistin Sakina Abdou, die beim Jazzfest Berlin 2025 ein fesselndes Solokonzert gab, und der Kontrabassist Thibault Cellier, der als Mitglied von Joachim Kühns French Trio 2024 beim Festival zu erleben war . ¡ Ya voy ! orientiert sich allerdings auch an den traditionellen Musikformen, mit denen die anderen beiden Mitglieder aufgewachsen sind: Sängerin Alejandra Charry und der Perkussionist und Marimbaspieler Moises Zamora Mezù kommen beide aus dem Dorf El Cabuyal, das im Departamento Valle del Cauca an der kolumbianischen Pazifikküste liegt. Sie zog bereits im Jahr 2004 nach Frankreich, er blieb in seiner Heimat – beim Hören der Musik der Gruppe wird ihre lebenslange Verbundenheit spürbar. Diese wurzelt in einem geteilten kulturellen Hintergrund, der weniger von den ansonsten in Kolumbien dominanten Stilen wie der Cumbia oder der Salsa geprägt wird: An der Westküste des Landes, wo mehr als 80 verschiedene Rhythmen gepflegt werden, stellt die Marimba eines der zentralen Instrumente dar. Auf Grundlage dieser musikalischen Traditionen sorgt Charrys dynamischer Gesang für ebenso viel Schwung wie Melodie. So beschwört die Band bisweilen den Geist der großen Totó la Momposina herauf, die im Mai dieses Jahres im Alter von 85 Jahren verstorben ist . Doch obwohl ¡ Ya voy ! in diesen Traditionen verwurzelt ist, schafft sich die Band dank der experimentierfreudigen Herangehensweise von Abdou und Cellier einen ganz eigenen Raum. Den französischen Musiker*innen gelingt es, die unerschütterlichen Grooves mit kompromisslos abenteuerlichen Improvisationen aufzubrechen, die von kraftvollen Bass-Ostinati getragen werden. Abdou erweitert ihr Saxofonspiel mit Flötenklängen, die an kolumbianische Spielweisen anknüpfen, während Cellier eine Art Bindeglied darstellt: Seine hypnotischen Basslines schlagen eine Brücke zwischen folkloristischen Mustern und avantgardistischen Ansätzen. Das Quartett zeichnet sich durch eben diese Verschmelzung unterschiedlicher Traditionen aus: Sie erschaffen eine Musik, die folkloristische kolumbianische Formen in sich aufnimmt und zugleich weiterdenkt; die sich zu allen Seiten öffnet und dabei von der Freude an der Gemeinschaftlichkeit getragen wird. This ebullient quartet includes two of the strongest figures in French improvised music: saxophonist Sakina Abdou, who played a riveting solo concert at Jazzfest Berlin 2025, and double bassist Thibault Cellier, who is part of pianist Joachim Kühn’s trio that played the festival in 2024 . But ¡ Ya voy ! is built around the traditional music of its two other members, singer Alejandra Charry and percussionist and marimba player Moises Zamora Mezù, who grew up together in the village of El Cabuyal in Colombia’s Pacific coastal region of Valle del Cauca – the former moved to France in 2004, while the latter remains in his homeland. Through the group’s music, their lifelong bond is palpable, rooted in this shared culture far removed from more dominant styles like cumbia and salsa. More than 80 different rhythms thrive on Colombia’s west coast, where the marimba is a key instrument. Drawing on these rich musical traditions, Charry’s dynamic singing provides as much propulsion as it does melody. At times the group evokes the spirit of the great Totó la Momposina, who passed away at age 85 in May this year . But while rooted in these traditions, ¡ Ya voy ! carves out a space of its own thanks to the exploratory mindset of Abdou and Cellier. The French musicians manage to cleave the imperturbable grooves with unapologetically adventurous improvisations that ride on the muscular bass ostinatos. Abdou complements her saxophone playing with flutes that connect with Colombian practice while Cellier is a kind of connective tissue, his hypnotic lines bridging folklore and avant-garde explorations. What sets the foursome apart is that the blend of the respective traditions of each musician finds a way into the end result, which reflects the Colombian folk sounds while also taking them in new directions. The music is wide open, shaped by the communicative joy fostered by the partnership.
