About

Known for her inventive approach to rhythm and improvisation, Soojin Suh has developed a singular musical language that draws from both contemporary jazz and Korean artistic traditions. Alongside her acclaimed work as a bandleader, Suh is a highly sought-after drummer and collaborator, playing a central role in Sungjae Son’s Near East Quartet and their self-titled ECM release. With pianist Jaehun Kang and bassist Hoo King, Soojin Suh’s Coloris Trio draws on the concept of “melodic breath”, a key principle in Korean traditional music. Their detailed arrangements and improvisations emerge from the pulse of the melody, making way for striking moments and musical textures that come from a uniquely Korean aesthetic. Presented in partnership with Korea’s renowned Jarasum Jazz Festival, these two special performances at The JazzLab showcase one of the most compelling ensembles in Korean jazz today. This project has received grant funding from the Australia-Korea Foundation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
