Musical Style: Jazz, Pop, Musical Theatre Hunter & The Gatherers return to Dazzle with an exciting tribute to modern pop music. Putting a jazz-inspired spin on songs from artists, like Lady Gaga, alongside favorites from the Golden Age of Musical Theatre, as well as jazz-pop fusion groups, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The show centers around the question: “How has jazz shaped pop music, and how can it continue to?” By blending improvisation, new arrangements, and music from across different eras and genres, Hunter & The Gatherers create a set that highlights the crossover between jazz and popular music in a fresh and exciting way. From the Golden Age of musical theatre, “Old Devil Moon” from the 1947 musical ‘Finian’s Rainbow’ originated in a Broadway musical. Artists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Chet Baker later recorded the tune, making it a great example of a crossover between popular music and jazz. In addition to Lady Gaga, the jazz / pop fusion portion of the set covers songs by Lake Street Dive and Sammy & the Friends. Both groups incorporate jazz and soul influences into modern pop songwriting, which supports the overall theme of the show, exploring the ways jazz can influence and intersect with popular music. Bandleader Hunter Gammel's musical journey has been marked not only by his extraordinary talent but also by his remarkable resilience. Born with cerebral palsy, a condition that affects movement and muscle coordination, Hunter has faced challenges that might have deterred others from pursuing an instrument like the piano. Yet, fueled by his passion for music, he has defied expectations and surpassed limitations, using the piano as a vehicle for self-expression and empowerment. As an active member of the Denver music scene, Hunter is known for his versatility and dynamic performances.
