About
“Blending the wistfulness of Astrud Gilberto with the robust liquidity of Flora Purim” ( JazzTimes ), Bay Area-based vocalist Masha Campagne brings an evening of the timeless bossa nova sounds of Brazil, including material from her newest album, 2025’s Alegre Menina . Beginning her musical life with classical cello and piano studies at Moscow’s Gnessin State Musical College, Campagne was introduced to jazz and bossa nova through the influence of her grandfather Matthew Fayans, a professional wind player who worked with the legendary Metropole Orkest, whose live concerts and record collection turned her musical direction to jazz, and particularly, the jazz and Brazilian pop hybrid known as bossa nova. Moving to San Francisco in 1991, Campagne immersed herself in the local scene as a performer and educator, winning 1st prize in the prestigious DownBeat Student Music Award for her work with the jazz vocal group Fanfares. The vocalist began her most enduring musical partnership in the early 2000s with Rio-born pianist/arranger Weber Iago, with whom she collaborated on her acclaimed debut Caminhos Cruzados in 2007 with a mix of classic jazz and Brazilian standards by Jobim, Guinga, and Djavan. Her follow-up, 2012’s Like Water, Like Air marked Campagne’s emergence as a composer.
