The Mario Rafael Trio’s unique sound is characterized by lyrical piano playing, a dynamic yet sensitive rhythm section, and boldly experimental improvisations. On the band’s latest album, the timeless beauty of classical music meets the freedom of modern jazz: Chopin and More rethinks Fryderyk Chopin’s best-known piano works for a jazz trio. The aim of the project is not only to shed new light on these Romantic piano pieces, but also to demonstrate just how vibrant, improvisational, and contemporary Chopin’s music can sound. In the trio’s performance, the subtlety of classical harmonies and the rhythmic freedom of jazz are organically interwoven, creating space for the magic born in the moment.
