Join us at Meyhouse Jazz for Modern Songbook, featuring bassist, vocalist, and composer Jeff Denson with Frank Martin on piano and Malachi Whitson on drums. This genre-blurring program features Denson’s original arrangements of music by Bonnie Raitt, Bill Withers, Peter Gabriel, Joni Mitchell, and Jeff Buckley, alongside jazz standards and original compositions. With his distinctive voice as both a bassist and vocalist, Denson brings a deeply personal sound to songs that move across jazz, folk, soul, and popular music traditions. A 19-time DownBeat Critics Poll honoree and winner of the 2021 Rising Star Electric Bassist category, Denson has performed on leading stages around the world. He has been praised by the San Francisco Chronicle as a “master of the jazz bass,” by Jazz Podium as an “emphatic singer of immense vocal talent,” and by JazzTimes for his “bass and vocal prowess.” Modern Songbook offers an intimate evening of expressive storytelling, inventive arrangements, and world-class musicianship — where familiar songs are reimagined through the lens of jazz.
