About
Vishnu • Bringi • Gunther • Howarth: Indo Jazz Exchange brings together four musicians from diverse musical backgrounds to explore the intersection of Indian classical music and jazz. Featuring original compositions alongside jazz and Carnatic repertoire, the ensemble highlights the shared values of improvisation, rhythmic interplay, and melodic expression found in both traditions. The group features Vishnu R. on the innovative Navtar®, his unique nine-string instrument that combines fretless, fretted, and harp elements to bridge the nuances of Carnatic melody with contemporary harmony. Joined by John Gunther (saxophones, clarinet, flute), Bobby Bringi (mridangam), and Zach Howarth (drums and percussion), the quartet creates an engaging musical conversation rooted in listening, interaction, and exploration. The performance moves between lyrical melodies, intricate rhythmic exchanges, and open improvisation, offering audiences a program that reflects both the distinct character of each tradition and the creative possibilities that emerge when they come together. The result is an evening of music that is thoughtful, dynamic, and accessible to listeners from any musical background. Vishnu R. is an award-winning performer, composer, and inventor from Bengaluru, India. He blends Carnatic, Western classical, and jazz traditions on his self-designed NAVTAR®, a unique nine-string instrument combining fretted, fretless, and harp elements. John Gunther is a saxophonist, clarinetist, flutist, composer, and Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. An internationally active performer, his work spans jazz, contemporary improvisation, chamber music, and electronic performance. Bobby Bringi is a guitarist, mridangam artist, and composer whose music draws on Indian classical traditions, jazz, blues, and contemporary improvisation. His work emphasizes memorable melodies, rich grooves, and cross-cultural collaboration. Zach Howarth is a drummer, composer, and educator based in Colorado. A recent Doctor of Jazz Studies, he is an active performer and recording artist known for his versatility, creative musicianship, and dynamic approach to rhythm.
