About
Terence Blanchard’s first UpSwing concert of 2027 is focused on a pair of California natives. Bay Area-born guitarist Charles Altura is renowned for his work with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Ambrose Akinmusire, Dayna Stephens, Thundercat, and Terence’s own E-Collective, with whom he has performed on the Miner stage. A two-time GRAMMY nominee for his work with Blanchard, Altura is among the most in-demand guitarists on the scene, balancing fiery fretboard acuity with a soulful, burnished tone. Beyond his work as a sideman, Altura leads several groups on the New York club circuit, including his new quintet with Ravi Coltrane and Milena Casado, and the Heart + Mind Quartet featuring a revolving cast of greats including SFJAZZ Collective members Matt Brewer and Kendrick Scott. Trumpet great Jeremy Pelt is a veteran of 25 albums as a leader and work with Vincent Herring, Ralph Peterson Jr., Wayne Shorter, and the Mingus Big Band, with whom he established his career. The Los Angeles native was recognized as a rising master during his time at Boston’s Berklee College of Music and has recorded a remarkable series of releases since his 2002 debut. His newest HighNote album, Our Community Will Not Be Erased , is an embrace of the positive contributions of his neighborhood and community, featuring a powerful set of originals and a veteran band, which he will be joined by on this performance, of pianist Orrin Evans , bassist Buster Williams , and drummer Lenny White .
