FRIDAY, October 9 (1 PM-2:30 PM) | 100 Years of John Coltrane Panel Discussion by: JazzReach’s Metta Quintet featuring Hans Schuman (Drums), Birsa Chatterjee (Tenor Saxophone), Langston Hughes II (Alto Saxophone), Lawrence Fields (Piano) and Adi Meyerson (Bass). Known for its adventurous spirit and exceptional musicianship, JazzReach’s Metta Quintet brings together some of today’s most creative and accomplished jazz artists. The ensemble’s collective curiosity and innovative approach have earned national acclaim for performances that honor jazz traditions while boldly pushing them forward. Presented by Earshot Jazz . Description: This immersive panel discussion and performance-demonstration explores the life, legacy, and cultural impact of jazz legend John Coltrane. Presented by JazzReach’s acclaimed resident ensemble, Metta Quintet, the audience will be exposed to Coltrane’s artistic journey across four chapters, from his early years and formative experiences to his groundbreaking work with Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and his own quartet. The program highlights key periods of Coltrane’s career, including his years with Prestige, Atlantic, and Impulse Records, as well as his later explorations of avant-garde jazz. Alongside the performance, a clinic format allows students to engage directly with Metta Quintet musicians as they demonstrate techniques, ideas, and personal insights into the many facets of jazz performance. The experience offers an engaging way for students and audiences to connect with Coltrane’s music, creative evolution, and enduring place in American and global culture.
