Skylar Tang Quartet

About

“A truly personal voice on the trumpet that already feels both rooted and forward-looking" ( The Mercury News ), Skylar Tang is the most exciting young trumpeter and composer in jazz. One of the brightest lights to emerge from the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars program, Tang is now a rising new voice on the New York scene and makes her homecoming debut as a bandleader with her phenomenally attuned quartet. A prodigious instrumentalist and rising musical force, the Bay Area native began her musical path with piano lessons at five and took up the trumpet at nine and composing at 14. She was a standout talent within SFJAZZ’s High School All-Stars program and gained priceless experience with Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz and Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington program, at which she won the 2022 Composition/Arranging Contest for her original work “Kaleidoscope.” Now based in New York, Tang is a true star in the making, appearing on saxophone great Joshua Redman’s 2025 album Words Fall Short and sharing the stage with the likes of vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater, trumpeter Sean Jones, percussionist John Santos, and the legendary bassist Rufus Reid. She was a highlighted performer during the 2026 SFJAZZ Gala and recently appeared at the Detroit Jazz Festival and Montreal Jazz Festival.
