Musical Style: Big Band Swing Joe Smith is an award-winning Denver trumpeter, bandleader, producer, and educator whose work bridges the classical, chamber, and jazz traditions. For over a decade he has led The Spicy Pickles featuring Hannah Rodriguez, and his heart has always belonged to the swing music of the 1930s and 40s. The Joe Smith Orchestra is his 13-piece big band, inspired by the sounds of Old Testament Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and Jimmie Lunceford. Made up of some of Denver's finest musicians and featuring multiple Downbeat award-winning vocalist Hannah Rodriguez, the orchestra plays this glorious repertoire the way it was meant to be heard: as party music, made to make you move.
