He was born in 1977 in New Orleans, LA to Ellis and Dolores Marsalis, the youngest brother to Branford, Wynton, Ellis III, Delfeayo, and Mboya. He started playing violin at age 5 with the Suzuki teaching method, and at age 6, he started playing the drums. When he was just 14, he made his recording debut on Delfeayo’s album Pontius Pilate’s Decision . As a senior in high school, Marsalis joined pianist Marcus Roberts’ trio. Marsalis would go on to record several albums with Roberts, including Portraits in Blue — a recasting of George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue — and a collaboration with conductor Seiji Ozawa and the Berlin Philharmonic.
