A Bay Area group for over 20 years, Falso Baiano explores traditional choro and contemporary brazilian jazz influences. Creating her signature sound in New York City, Kerry Politzer is a mainstay on the Portland Brazilian jazz and choro scene, participating in the annual "Dia de Choro." Falso Baiano is thrilled about this collaboration, after Kerry sat in with them on a couple of songs last year. GRUPO FALSO BAIANO Grupo Falso Baiano is a San Francisco-based quartet bringing the joy of Brazilian choro music to audiences in California and beyond. Choro is one of Brazil’s earliest popular musics, originating in the 1870s, and remains a vibrant, evolving style today. The group honors choro’s 150-year legacy, bringing their varied musical backgrounds and creativity to this timeless tradition. Their performances span classic tunes to jazz-influenced pieces, showcasing the genre’s rich diversity. With 20 years together, Grupo Falso Baiano has graced top jazz and world music stages on the west coast, including SF Jazz, Yoshi’s Oakland, Yoshi’s San Francisco, The Freight and Salvage, the California Jazz Conservatory, San Jose Jazz Festival, Healdsburg Jazz Festival, and L.A.C.M.A. They’ve worked with renowned Brazilian and jazz artists like Anat Cohen, Ana Carbatti, Jovino Santos Neto, Moyseis Marques, Rogerio Souza, and Alessandro Penezzi. Beyond performing and touring, Grupo Falso Baiano educates students around California about choro and Brazilian music in partnership with Pasadena Pops, Young Audiences of Northern CA, and Youth in Arts. They have twice been awarded recording grants by the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music (2010 & 2013). Grupo Falso Baiano is Ami Molinelli (percussion), Brian Moran (7-string guitar), Jesse Appelman (mandolin), and Zack Pitt-Smith (reeds). grupofalsobaiano.com KERRY POLITZER Kerry Politzer is a Portland-based jazz pianist, composer, and educator. She is on the music faculty of Portland State University. Kery received a Bachelor of Music from the New England Conservatory of Music, and a Master of Music from Rowan University. Prior to her latest album Alternate Route (2025, Whirlwind Recordings), which featured guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, Kerry released eight jazz CD’s as a leader. Her commissions include large ensemble works for the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble as well as a solo piano piece, “Microclimates,” for the pianist Andree-Ann Deschenes. In 2019, Kerry was awarded a Regional Arts and Culture Council Artistic Focus grant to explore the music of Brazilian composer Durval Ferreira. The project culminated in the August 2019 release of Diagonal: The Music of Durval Ferreira. Kerry continues to be inspired by Brazilian music. The pianist has performed at the 25th Annual Gene Harris Jazz Festival, Frankie’s Jazz Club, the Black Dolphin, The 1905, Reno Jazz Festival, Jazz Forum, the Oregon Coast Jazz Party, Mezzrow, Mr. Tipples, Smalls, the Sound Room, and many others. kerrypolitzer.com
