Tonight saxophonist Richard Pavlidis presents BIRD, a special tribute to Parker’s all-encompassing musical legacy. Best known for creating the style known as ‘bebop’ in the 1940s alongside luminaries such as Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, Parker’s musical innovations remain the basis of jazz improvisation to this day. His genius changed the direction of music forever, and we can only guess at what further developments he might have made had it not been for his passing in 1955 at the age of just 34. A Victorian College of the Arts graduate, Richard Pavlidis has released three acclaimed solo albums. Major US publication All About Jazz calls his playing ‘bright, powerful and engaging’, and The Australian has called him a ‘saxophone colossus in the making’.
