Nation's 1st Black-Owned Golf Club Is Venue for NJ Juneteenth Celebration

Social Justice Matters, Inc. \(SJM\), will celebrate its ninth community Juneteenth early this year on June 13, with a multitude of free activities for all ages. The venue is historic, the Shady Rest Golf and Country Club, 820 Jerusalem Road, Scotch Plains. It's the nation’s first Black-owned golf and country club and now a public course. It's a grass-roots celebration, put on in partnership with the townships of Scotch Plains and Fanwood. The event is open to the public and will run from noon to 5 p.m. This year’s theme is Freedom Forward: Building the Next Chapter Together. Events will include live music, a West African dance performance and African drum workshop, children’s story time featuring local authors, history presentations from the Kramer Manor History Project and Preserve Shady Rest Committee, tours of historic Shady Rest, food trucks and more.
