The DC Jazz Festival takes over Pearl Street Warehouse as part of D.C. Jazz Festival’s programming on The Wharf, featuring several D.C.-area ensembles. 2:30 p.m. As a college-age musician, pianist José André already boasts and impressive performance resume as well as a sophisticated tone rooted in the classic bop of Herbie Hancock, the Latin inflections of Chick Corea and the rhythms of his native Bolivia. 4:15 p.m. New York City-based bassist Hannah Marks leads a contemporary bop quartet through standards and her own buoyant originals. 5:45 p.m. Trumpeter Kenny Rittenhouse has led ensembles of various sizes around the DMV for two decades, and is a member of many others (including the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra). Rittenhouse specializes hard-bop a la Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers under Freddie Hubbard and Lee Morgan and his groups deliver swinging takes on the standards and the members’ originals. 7:30 p.m. Guitarist Vilem Spilka blends Czech folk traditions with straight-ahead jazz. 9:15 p.m. Venezuelan percussionist Fran Vielma, an instructor up at Baltimore’s Peabody Conservatory, gathers some of the strongest musicians from the District and Charm City to present a special program of music by Pan-American composers, including many from Latin America. 10:45 Son Cubano Subterraneo is a six-piece ensemble performing music from Cuba’s musical golden era, particularly Cuban Son, the style at the core of Latin Salsa.
