Cortex

About

Cortex is a French psychedelic jazz-funk group founded by pianist and composer Alain Moin. They pull stylistic inspiration from the atonal melodies and elaborate polyrhythms of American avantgarde pioneers like Don Cherry and Ornette Coleman, as well as funk and bossa nova. Their 1975 album, Tropeau Bleu, carries a lasting presence in contemporary Black music, having been sampled by hip-hop artists like Tyler, The Creator, MF DOOM, Madlib, Rick Ross and Kanye West. Here they perform with special guest composer and multi-instrumentalist Adrian Younge, co-founder of the Jazz is Dead record label and live music project, as well as funk, hip-hop and dance DJ J.Rocc.
