John Henderson has rapidly become one of Melbourne’s most arresting contemporary jazz trios. Featuring Henry Hicks (electric bass), Damien Ellis (drums) and Joshua Smeltink (piano), the group has drawn international attention through performances at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and throughout Berlin — forging a sound that collides modern post-bop, open-form composition and explosive ensemble interplay. Their second album captures a trio equally capable of restraint and exploration, merging expansive contemporary harmony and arrangement without sacrificing the urgency and propulsion associated with great trios.
