Led by Montreal pianist Mat Jon, the quintet plays straight-ahead jazz rooted in bebop, hard bop, and the Great American Songbook. The repertoire draws from Bud Powell, Sonny Clark, Gigi Gryce, Freddie Redd, Horace Silver, Barry Harris, Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley, and the great composers of the American Songbook. New York-based saxophonist Jacob Chung is a regular presence at clubs including Smalls, Mezzrow, The Django, Ornithology, and Dizzy’s Club. He has performed with musicians including Peter Washington, Pasquale Grasso, Joe Farnsworth, and the Mingus Big Band. His 2024 album The Sage, featuring Vincent Herring and Joe Farnsworth, was named one of the best Canadian jazz releases of the year by the Ottawa Citizen. Montreal trumpeter Rafael Salazar is a frequent collaborator of Mat Jon and an active presence on the city’s jazz scene. His playing is firmly rooted in the bebop and hard-bop traditions, drawing inspiration from Kenny Dorham, Clifford Brown, and Freddie Hubbard.
