INTRO WRITTEN BY STEVE RUBIE: Back in the late 80’s at the old Club in the Kings Road an eager young Anglo-American medical student used to turn up to “sit in” and play pretty decent hard bop sax. We all got to know him well and weren’t that surprised when he took a year off his medical studies to study at the world famous Berklee School of Music in Boston, USA. We did wonder if he would ever come back to finish his studies, he was that good, but he did and the world of laser eye surgery was never to be the same again. Returning to the US shortly after qualifying, it would be another 12 years or so before he returned to the UK as Professor Reinstein, quickly re-establishing himself not only as a World class eye surgeon but also as a regular at the Club! An excellent sax player he has been playing here with his own quartet for around 23 years now and his unwavering support for the Club, particularly through some of our more challenging times, has been generous and an integral part of our community. And following Dan will be a wonderful musician who Dan first introduced me to and in whose band Dan also plays, the hugely talented bass player/trumpeter/pianist/Musical Director/educationalist US-born Mo Pleasure. Although a relative “newbie” (Mo has only been performing at the Club for just under 10 years!), he’s quickly become a member of the 606 “family” – a superlative musician, and a delightful person to have around. It’s a real pleasure to have Mo and his band perform as part of our 50th Anniversary celebrations. American-born but British educated, saxophonist Dan Reinstein first began playing at the old 606 Club on Kings Road when he was a medical undergraduate. Even then he was impressive, and after taking time off from his medical studies to attend the Berklee School of Music he became even more remarkable. Dan returned to the US in the early 90s where he became one of the world’s leading experts in laser eye surgery (he’s now officially Professor Reinstein). But he never stopped performing, and when he returned to London to live and work it was great to hear his fluent, classic hard-bop, muscular sax playing again at the Club, and the rest, as they say, is history-Dan & his quartet, Tim Lapthorn piano, Steve Rose bass & Mark Mondesir drums, have performing at the Club for the last 23 years. “Reinstein…impressive hard-bop saxophonist” Time Out
