Nominated for 5 Grammys, Karrin Allyson has delved into bop & blues, pop & Great American standards, as well as composed her own songs. Her highly regarded 2001 album “Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane” was a beautiful rendering of the songs on Trane’s 1963 classic, plus 3 other numbers associated with him. On 2015’s “Many a New Day,” Karrin paid tribute to Rodgers & Hammerstein in the distinguished company of legendary pianist Kenny Barron. Karrin will be singing with a great band, assembled just for this concert: The artistry of NYC pianist John Di Martino can best be described by his peers: “John’s soul and being come straight through to his music, the jazz world needs him!” –Sheila Jordan (NEA Jazz Master) “John Di Martino is one of my absolute personal favorite pianists of today. His music is an honest outpouring of light!” –Benny Green (Jazz Pianist) “John di Martino’s middle name should be ‘taste,’ for he conveys that quality in both solo and supportive roles, in jazz as well as Latin music.” –Ray Barretto (NEA Jazz Master) “John Di Martino is a first-call veteran of the New York City jazz scene. This multi-recorded artist has long been a favorite of singers for his gigantic ears and intuitive, uncluttered playing—rare gifts that also enhance any instrumentalist he accompanies or arranges. He lets the essence of a song speak for itself.” –All About Jazz Virtuoso vibraphonist, composer, and arranger Nick Mancini is one of the most dazzling and exciting jazz performers playing today. Tenor sax player, Rickey Woodard is an L.A. legend. Rickey broke into the Big Time touring for 8 years with the great Ray Charles. Rickey went on to play with Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, B.B. King, John Legend, and Diana Krall. The concert will be presented in the beautiful Centennial Ballroom at the classic Los Angeles Athletic Club in downtown. The parking garage entrance is at 646 South Olive Street 90014. Parking is $10 with validation. Optional brunch/cocktails are available before the concert, just note on the ticket form whether you want to come for brunch. Jazz singer Vicki Burns is the complete package. With her three-octave range, sure sense of rhythm, and perfect intonation, she can scat convincingly, swing like a horn, and write hip songs worthy of attention from other vocalists. She has produced three CDs as a leader: Siren Song (2005), Live at Anna’s Jazz Island (2008), and her 2022 release Lotus Blossom Days. Jazz writer Marc Myers said, "Vicki's voice on Lotus Blossom Days is warm and round, sophisticated and optimistic with shades of blue. She also takes terrific risks that pay off.” As a performer, Vicki Burns has been delighting audiences for years with her impeccable taste and glorious tone. She has performed at some of the top jazz clubs and festivals around the country, opened for Billy Taylor and Max Roach in the “Bright Moments” Concert series in Amherst, MA., and she was featured on “Music America,” a syndicated WGBH public radio broadcast. She currently performs regularly in NYC at Birdland, Iridium Jazz Club, Jazz at Kitano, The Plaza Hotel, Zinc Bar and Mezzrow. Burns has found success because she infuses each song with heartfelt expression, digging into the lyrics and melody to reveal their richness. It is a formula that has garnered her many fans and the respect of her peers, which is why Max Roach once described Burns’ singing as “a gold mine.” “Brilliant vocals by Vicki… she can cast a love spell and she is, after all, quite the siren herself. An amazing range and you can hear the joy, the melancholy, the rapture, the devastation and all are equally convincing. Perhaps that is the final word on such a great talent as Vicki Burns, she is convincing.” The Jazz Owl by Travis Rogers, Jr. “Like a master chef, Burns figures out what she needs to add to make the music delectable to the ear without overdoing it with unnecessary additives.” – All About Jazz Featuring John Di Martino-piano, Sam Bevan-Bass, Tim Bulkley-Drums, and Special guest Noel Jewkes saxophone Tickets at Vicki Burns Quintet
