About Julia Hülsmann
Hülsmann’s official biography traces her 1991 move to Berlin for jazz-piano study at the University of the Arts and the formation of her own trio in 1997. It documents composition, songwriting, teaching, and ensemble leadership as distinct parts of her work.[1]
Her project history moves from poetry- and song-based collaborations to the long-running ECM trio and quartet. The official music and video pages preserve those editions separately, including work with vocalists, strings, and the quartet with saxophonist Ule Kempendorff.[1][2][3]
Berlin trio since 1997
The official chronology establishes Hülsmann’s long-running small-group leadership in the city.[1]
Poetry and song projects
Scattering Poems, Come Closer, and Good Morning Midnight each organize music around different writers and vocal partners.[1]
ECM quartet
The quartet expands the trio with saxophone while preserving its core bass-and-drums partnership.[2]
